Privacy policy
Effective date: [to be set at launch]
The short version
- Your photos and videos go directly from your phone to your own computer. They are never stored on our servers, and we can’t read them.
- We keep the minimum needed to run your account and connect your devices.
- We don’t sell your data, and we don’t use your photos for advertising or to train anything.
Your photos and videos
Preen copies your photos and videos from your phone to computers that you set up with the Preen desktop app, and lets you browse them from your phone. That traffic travels over a direct, encrypted connection (WebRTC) between your own devices.
When a direct connection isn’t possible, Preen+ can route the connection through a relay. The relay only passes along encrypted traffic: it can’t read your photos and doesn’t store them.
Your library is stored on your own computers and drives, encrypted with a key that only your phone and your recovery phrase hold. We never have that key, so if you lose both your phone and your recovery phrase, we can’t recover your photos. You control those copies — including deleting them, or exporting a readable copy.
Search and photo analysis
Features like searching by what’s in a photo, or whether people are in it, run on your own devices. Finding place names may use your phone’s location service (Apple or Google), depending on your settings. The results stay on your devices; they aren’t sent to us.
What our servers handle
Our servers run your account and help your devices find and connect to each other. To do that we process:
- Account details — your email address and your password (stored only in protected form [confirm]).
- Device information — the devices you’ve signed in on, so they can recognize each other (for example a device name and a device key).
- Connection details — while your devices set up a connection, network information such as IP addresses passes through our servers so they can reach each other.
- Family membership — if you use a family plan, which people belong to it.
- Subscription status — whether your account has Preen+. Payments are handled by Apple or Google; we don’t receive your card details.
[Describe retention periods for account and connection data, and any server logs.]
Family members
With Preen+, several people can keep libraries on the same computers. Each person’s library is encrypted with their own key. A family member’s key is kept on the computer only in memory while their phone is connected, so the computer’s owner can’t open their stored photos. While someone’s library is open on a computer, an administrator of that computer could in principle read it.
